Compared to larger universities, the number of on-campus dining options at Rice is very limited. Aside from cafeteria options, the student center offers a Smoothie King, Subway, Coffee House, Willy’s Pub, and Sammy’s (upscale Cafeteria food). Lucky students might get an invite from Rice faculty to dine at Cohen House, but many students graduate without ever stepping inside.

Upperclassmen rave about the improvements that have been made in campus dining over the last several years. Subway and Smoothie King have both opened in recent years, and the addition of three college serveries (in the place of the old Central Kitchen system) has greatly increased the quality and variety of food offered at the residential colleges. The cost of the undergrad meal plan has steadily increased with the improvements, but students can choose from vegetarian options, a salad and fruit bar, sandwiches, pizza, grill food, soup, desert, baked goods, cereal, made-to-order omelets (only on weekends), or main dishes. The serveries will also occasionally offer a themed food night that provides extra options (Italian Night, Pacific Rim, Open-Wok-Make-Your- Own-Stir-Fry Night, and more). It is, after all, still cafeteria food, but most students have no problem finding something tolerable to eat, and many dishes actually turn out to be fairly tasty.

Students feel lukewarm about Rice facilities. Over the last couple years, there has always been one construction project or another going on to improve facilities. The noise pollution and ugly construction equipment can be a nuisance, but the improvements made to the Rice gym, the student center, and several academic and residential buildings, with the addition of the food serveries, new college commons, and other new buildings (Martel College, the new Wiess College, and the Jones Graduate School of Business, for example) seem to be worth the trouble. The student body is also excited about acquiring two new dorms, Duncan and McMurtry, in the fall of 2009, as well as a brand new recreational facility center that’s supposed to be pretty decked out.

Fortunately, all students can enjoy the new and old food options at the student center, and afterward attempt to burn off these options at the Rice gym. The recent addition of small television screens to each treadmill, elliptical machine, and exercise bike has been a popular one. However, the TVs are not always in the best of shape, and a few have problems with static, or are unable to receive certain channels. The Rice Media center offers a photo lab, which is open to anyone in the Rice or Houston community. However, in order to use the lab, you must either take a photography class or demonstrate that you have previous training. The movie theater located in the same building is small and cozy, and shows an excellent variety of exotic movies (usually foreign or independent films).

The widely-circulated (and not entirely unsubstantiated) rumor is that Rice students tend to be unattractive, and that the only two kinds of Rice relationships are random hookups or four-year relationships that eventually lead to marriage. The truth is that the dating situation and experience at Rice varies for everyone. You may not find as many traditionally attractive hotties at Rice as you would at large state schools, but then again, we have fewer people. We tend not to attract many stereotypical frat boys or sorority girls, although there are a few, and the number may be increasing. This has been attributed to an issue of Seventeen magazine some years back, which declared Rice the number one choice school “for girls who want it all.”

You can, of course, find whatever “type” you might be looking for (or not looking for) at Rice: athletic, romantic, poetic, intelligent, flirtatious, theatrical, intelligent, geeky, genuine, graceful, player, intelligent, elegant, or the boy/girl-next-door. Just like at any school, you’re going to have your beautiful people and your not so beautiful people. Beauty is most certainly in the eye of the beholder, and there are plenty of attractive girls and guys at Rice.

Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States, and the urban sprawl, heavy traffic, and air pollution can be very intimidating at first. However, there are amazing advantages to living in a large city. Many Rice students acknowledge that the social life on campus is enough to keep students busy without needing to look beyond the Rice hedges for entertainment. However, outside of the Rice bubble, there is a world of diverse cultural and social opportunities to explore. Be sure to make time to experience the plethora of restaurants, museums, theaters, clubs, bars, sports teams, concerts, and everything else that Houston has to offer. While there are definitely areas of town that should be avoided late at night or when you are alone, students say that you only need to use common sense and exercise caution to guarantee your safety.

Do not compare Houston to New York, L.A., or Chicago. However, Houston does have something to offer for everyone. Overall, it is a fairly happening place for a young person to live. Go off the beaten path of typical Rice hangouts, and discover your own. If nothing else, you can keep things interesting by dining at a different restaurant every time you go out, and you probably won’t run out of options before you graduate!
